Ivanovic wins Luxembourg final
Ana Ivanovic of Serbia outlasted Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova to win the Fortis Championships Sunday.
The second-seeded Ivanovic lost the first set and was down 3-0 in the second before she righted herself and took the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Ivanovic, who clinched a berth in the season-ending WTA Sony Ericsson Championships in Madrid with her quarterfinal win here, won her fifth career title and third of 2007. She also won in Berlin and Los Angeles, and was a runner-up twice — losing in Tokyo and at the French Open.
“It was a very tough match today,” Ivanovic said. “Daniela started off really well, playing aggressively and going for her shots. I struggled to find my rhythm; I told myself when I was 3-0 down in the second set that I needed to be more aggressive. It was a riskier approach but better that way, and it worked for me.”
Hantuchova was participating in her second final of the month, as she was a loser to Lindsay Davenport in the title match in Bali.
“It was a great match,” Hantuchova said. “I played really well at the beginning but then Ana started to go for her shots, putting more pressure on me, and I did not have much time to go for mine.”
Ivanovic pocketed $88,265 with her win.
