Bulgaria Greece Sues Farmers Protest
The Bulgarian authorities have approached the Court of Justice of the European Communities in Luxembourg in an attempt to settle its scores with the Greek protesting farmers blocked the border between the two EU countries.“Bulgaria will seek compensation for losses that the blockade has created for her company,” Prime Minister Boyko Borisov told journalists on Friday. “I warned the Greek authorities that we as neighbors, they will wait for the blockade to lift Wednesday,” he added.Experts noted that the only way for Bulgarian companies to get compensation for their losses is to sue individual Greek state in a Greek court.A complaint to the European Commission or even a victory over the Greek state in Luxembourg will be no compensation to secure the Bulgarian transport companies, lawyers commented.Greek farmers blocked roads to the Bulgarian border on Monday to the demands for higher prices for agricultural press. Cars and trucks with goods to destinations ranging from Poland to Italy are stranded on both sides of the border.Earlier this week the Bulgarian and Romanian Ministers of Agriculture on the European Commission to help end the roadblocks.Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov accused authorities in neighboring Greece for not doing enough to clear roadblocks protesting farmers stopped traffic on the border between the two EU countries.A year ago, thousands of farmers blocked major roads across the country, intimidating conservative government of Kostas Karamanlis coughing in a package of EUR 500 M to support and produce large losses for Bulgarian companies.
